Altered mixed media suitcase. Final post for Mixed Media Place

Hello, my dear Mixed Media Place friends!

This is Maria Lillepruun with you today. I am very excited to present you my final inspiration for this totally awesome blog! It was a wonderful journey!

I love altering stuff, so my family and friends keep bringing me their old things with the words: "I haven´t throw it away, because I thought you might actually want to do something with it..." I am sure many of you can relate to this situation :) So today I decided to show you a large mixed media project. I prepared a video tutorial on how I altered an old cardboard suitcase, that used to belong to a friend of mine.

Firts of all, I covered the inner side of the suitcase with the vintage decorative paper. It is an easy and effective way to decorate the insides of all kind of boxes. I used Gloss Gel medium to stick this flexible paper to the surface. 

Then I used some Heavy Body Gel to attach a few wooden decorations to the sides, as well as some background chipboard, metallic and glass embellishments, a flower and some art pebbles to the suitcase cover. Then I colored the whole suitcase black, using the Heavy Gesso. The only things uncovered were the textile flower, and the glass balls and pebbles.

Then, I sprayed the suitcase with shimmering Lindy´s Gang sprays, using copper and bronze shades. Once the surface was dry, I touched up the background and the embellishments with metallic acrylic paint. Also, I made some highlights here and there with White Gold wax.

I also added some curious heat embossed areas to the surface, using some chunky embossing powder. The final glamorous step was to sprinkle some golden glass glitter to the focal point of the suitcase cover.

And voilà, my vintage decorated suitcase is ready! Totally functional, of course :)

Altered mermaid + tutorial / Альтер-русалочка + MK

Dear mixed media friends! 

This is Maria Lillepruun with you today on Mixed Media Place. My new project is an altered plastic mermaid that my daughter has broken. I decided to turn it into a little shiny sculpture. Everybody likes mermaids, right? 

I fell in love with Powertex textile hardeners long ago. This is an endless inspiration for mixed media projects.

The basic process looks like this:

First, I assembled the broken doll on the natural rock that is meant to serve as the sculpture base. Then, I wrapped the doll in fabric, that had been previously dipped in Powertex medium.

The next day it all was dry, and I could play with all kind of different media on it. I covered the newly made sculpture in white gesso, and later colored it with Lindy´s Gang sprays.

Then, I added big plastic beads and glass art pebbles, gluing them onto the fabric. I also added more texture to the surfaces with green microbeads, gluing them with 3D Gloss Gel.

Later, I added deeper shades of color with alcohol inks by Ranger. When all was dry, I glued some decorative silver foil onto the mermaid, and sprinkled glitter on top of it.

The final result is complex and elaborate, as well as chic and glamorous.

Я когда-то давно уже купила светящуюся в темноте волшебную палочку Гарри Поттера, неплохую, но простенькую пластмассовую имитацию в картонной коробке. Покупала конкретно с мыслью, что задекорирую коробку под сказочный ларец. И вот, наконец-то, час пробил. Смотрите МК! Надеюсь, Вам будет интересно.

ENG Today I am here to show you my brand new video tutorial on a fairy tale altered object. Long ago, I bought a plastic Harry Potter wand in a cardboard box. I had this certain thought in my head that I want to alter the box to look it more like a real magic wand storage.

My main focus was on the box, which I wanted to turn into something magical, more suitable for the powerful wand of Harry Potter. I intentionally used the snakeskin texture and a deer on the box, referring to the magic wand owner. 

First of all, I painted the whole box with Heavy Gesso Black, attaching the chipboard to the surface with the same medium. Then I applied the snakeskin texture, using the beautiful mixed media stencil. I glued on some clay decorations that I made for this project, using an air hardening clay and a beautiful silicone mold. I also added some extra texture with White Sand Texture Paste, and painted all black again.

Shimmer sprays were just perfect to add mystical shades of color to the surface of the box. The colorful waxes helped to bring out the structure of the clay decorations. And I also did add some toppings to the surface, using 3D Gloss Gel to glue all the tiny particles.

The magic wand itself looked a little bit too new and too plastic, so I tuned it with wax and brown rust paste, so it would look more organic in the mixed media box. The interior of the box was also modified - I dyed some lace with ink sprays and glued it inside the box.

Today I would like to share my new altered object tutorial. I do not often alter kids´ toys, but this time I had this thought of creating a cool masculine art object out of my son´s toy bike. My male colleague is fond of bikes, and he is also a carpenter and a furniture restorer, so I decided to make this altered bike for him as a Christmas gift. As you may notice, there is a crate full of miniature carpenter tools on the back of the bike :) This is how I combined two life interests of my colleague, so he could relate to the gift.

The main mixed media products for this project were Black Heavy Gesso and rust pastes of different shades. I have painted the toy bike black with the gesso, and decorated it with metallic embellishments. I attached the latter with the Heavy Body Gel. I also created a crate out of matchsticks, and painted it black as well. Then I used three Rust Pastes to add color and a little bit of sandy texture to the art object. When the bike was dry, I retouched it with the Opal Wax, adding some metallic shine to the surfaces.
